THE 10% VISION: POWERING THE FUTURE WITH WAVES
October 9 2024
At Havkraft, we believe in a future where 10% of the world’s energy comes from the untapped power of ocean waves. This bold vision is our response to the growing need for sustainable, reliable energy sources in the fight against climate change. The 10% Vision isn’t just a target—it’s a pathway toward a more resilient and cleaner global energy system by 2050.
Why 10%?
The oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and hold a vast, constant energy potential. By capturing even a small portion of this energy, we can make a significant impact on the global energy mix. Our goal is for wave energy to contribute 10% of the world’s electricity by 2050, helping to stabilize the grid, complement other renewables like solar and wind, and reduce our reliance on costly storage solutions like batteries and hydrogen.
Wave Power: A Reliable Renewable
One of the greatest challenges facing renewable energy today is the issue of intermittency. Solar and wind energy are excellent sources of clean power, but they depend on weather conditions, leading to fluctuations in supply. Wave power, however, is highly predictable and consistently available. The ocean’s waves generate energy 24/7, providing a reliable baseload that helps to balance the grid and ensure a continuous supply of electricity.
By integrating wave power into the renewable energy mix, we can reduce the need for large-scale energy storage and lower the overall cost of transitioning to a clean energy future. This makes wave energy not only a sustainable solution but also an economically viable one.
How We’re Getting There
Our patented Havkraft Wave Energy Converter (H-WEC) technology is at the core of our 10% Vision. Built on the proven principles of the Oscillating Water Column (OWC), the H-WEC captures the energy of ocean waves and transforms it into clean, renewable power. Its modular design makes it adaptable to a variety of marine environments, from nearshore installations to large offshore projects, allowing us to scale wave energy solutions globally.
We’ve already taken significant steps toward achieving this vision. In 2015, we successfully demonstrated the potential of our H-WEC technology aboard the MS Havkraft vessel. Since then, we have continued to refine and expand our wave energy solutions, paving the way for broader implementation in the coming decades.
A Future Aligned with Nature
The 10% Vision is about more than just energy generation—it’s about creating a sustainable energy system that works in harmony with the planet. Wave energy is space-efficient, durable, and designed to coexist with marine ecosystems, making it one of the most environmentally friendly renewable energy sources available. By working with nature, rather than against it, we can create a future where clean energy is abundant, accessible, and sustainable.
The Road to 2050
Reaching 10% of global energy from waves by 2050 is an ambitious goal, but we are confident it’s within reach. As governments, industries, and communities around the world work toward net-zero emissions, wave power will play an increasingly important role in the global energy landscape.
At Havkraft, we are committed to leading this wave energy revolution. Our technology, innovation, and deep respect for the environment drive us forward on the road to 2050, where the oceans will power a significant portion of the world’s energy needs.
Together, we can achieve the 10% Vision and build a cleaner, more resilient future powered by the sea.

NO MOVABLE PARTS IN CONTACT WITH SEA – BRILLIANT!
July 6 2023
Wave power is a promising renewable energy source that harnesses the power of ocean waves to generate electricity. When it comes to designing wave energy systems, one important factor for success is to avoid using moving mechanical parts in direct contact with the sea. By adopting such an approach, a technology known as the Oscillating Water Column (OWC) emerges as a solution with great longevity and lower operation and maintenance (O&M) costs.
One of the main challenges in wave power generation is dealing with the harsh and corrosive marine environment. The constant exposure to seawater, waves, and extreme weather conditions can cause significant wear and tear on mechanical components, leading to increased maintenance requirements and potential system failures. By eliminating or minimizing moving parts in direct contact with the sea, the OWC technology effectively mitigates these challenges.
In an OWC system, the primary mechanism for energy conversion involves the oscillation of air within a chamber as waves enter and exit. As waves propagate towards the shoreline, they drive the rise and fall of the water level inside the chamber, creating a reciprocating airflow. This airflow is then directed through a turbine or an air-driven generator, which converts the kinetic energy of the moving air into electrical power.
The absence of moving mechanical parts in contact with the sea is a key advantage of the OWC system. This design choice significantly reduces the complexity and vulnerability of the system, leading to enhanced longevity and reliability. Without direct exposure to seawater, the risk of corrosion and mechanical failure is minimized, resulting in reduced maintenance needs and increased operational efficiency.
Moreover, the elimination of moving parts also translates into lower O&M costs. Traditional wave energy systems that rely on mechanical components such as gears, bearings, and rotating shafts require regular inspections, lubrication, and replacements. These maintenance activities can be time-consuming, expensive, and often require specialized personnel. In contrast, the OWC technology offers a more straightforward and cost-effective approach, as it requires minimal maintenance and can be easily accessed for inspection or repairs when needed.
Additionally, the longevity of an OWC system contributes to its economic viability. By avoiding the need for frequent component replacements, the system can operate efficiently for extended periods, ensuring a higher return on investment. This longevity is a crucial factor in establishing wave power as a sustainable and economically competitive energy source.
In conclusion, the avoidance of moving mechanical parts in contact with the sea is a crucial success factor in wave power generation. The Oscillating Water Column (OWC) technology offers an innovative solution with great longevity and lower O&M costs. By relying on the oscillation of air rather than complex mechanical systems, the OWC technology minimizes maintenance requirements, reduces the risk of mechanical failure, and ensures the long-term viability of wave power as a renewable energy source.
